Soil treatment and materials recovery in the South West

GB Card & Partners recently attended the Soil treatment and Materials Recovery workshop at the Exeter library, run by CL:AIRE in conjunction with the Geological Society and the South West Contaminated Land Forum.  The aim of the workshop was to provide an update on the latest industry guidance on material management, paying particular reference to the CL:AIRE Definition of Waste:Code of Practice (DOW:COP) updates and the recent asbestos in soil guidance (CAR-SOIL).

With GB Card & Partners assisting several clients in assessing feasibility of development on landfill sites, Geoff Card was invited to present on the ‘Pitfalls and potentials of development on former landfills’, where material management is often key in the planning and cost effective delivery of earthworks operations.  Geoff highlighted issues in the inconsistency between the earthwork suitability of waste materials against their acceptance criteria under the DOW: COP. Development potential is heavily dependent on the nature of the landfill material including its age and provenance, as well as the environmental sensitivity of the site.  Geoff introduced the Landfill Development Index (LDI) at the presentation that enables consultants, site owners and development funders to quickly categorize a landfill site into its development potential.
