GB Card & Partners comprises predominantly chartered professionals, with backgrounds in engineering, geology and sciences, with significant experience of the construction and development sectors. Whilst all employees have impressive career profiles, an overview of the senior team members is provided below.
Dr. Geoffrey B. Card, BSc PhD CEng FICE EurIng CGeol FGS CSci
Geoff has over 35 years of experience in providing civil, geotechnical and environmental engineering solutions all over the world. He has considerable experience of major transport and infrastructure projects such as London Docklands, Crossrail, and signature building developments in the Thames Corridor.
He is a recognised expert on the design and construction of development on derelict land such as shallow mine workings, contaminated and landfill gassing sites. He is often called upon to provide litigation support in relation to the risks associated with brownfield redevelopment and geotechnical issues.
Geoff has authored much of the UK’s guidance relating to ground gas and has sat on various steering groups and drafting committees. He has directed the assessment and remediation of many brownfield sites reshaping the London Skyline, including Wandsworth Riverside Quarter, Millennium Harbour, Embassy Gardens, and the Olympic Velodrome.
Laura Bacon, BSc CGeol EurGeol FGS RoGEP
Laura has over thirteen years’ experience in geotechnical and geo-environmental engineering consultancy for major infrastructure, commercial/industrial and residential development projects across the UK.
Laura also has experience in the project management of site investigations, data reviews, risk assessment of contaminated land, ground remediation design, foundation design, slope stability analysis and third-party independent reviews.
Additionally, Laura is responsible for business management and development of GB Card & Partners as well as management of large building and infrastructure projects, technical support and human resources.
Benjamin Middleton Gaish, BA (Hons)
Since joining the company in 2016, Benjamin has progressively taken on a more senior role in overseeing the day to day financial management, IT governance, and implementation of the Quality Management System. As a member of the Senior Management Team, alongside Dr Geoffrey Card and Laura Bacon, he is directly involved with the strategic direction of the company and overseeing key growth of the company.
To support the company objectives; Benjamin is currently studying for his CMI Level 5 Diploma in Management and Leadership with the ambition of gaining Chartered Manager status in 2021.
Tim New, BSc (Hons) MSc CGeol EurGeol FGS RoGEP AMICE
Tim’s experience spans over fifteen years, working on a range of geotechnical and geo-environmental projects in the UK and New Zealand.
Tim is particularly experienced in the design and management of ground investigations for residential and commercial development, and the interpretation of data to produce contaminated land and geotechnical risk assessments. Tim also has extensive experience in building damage assessment and the repair and replacement of foundations, following the Canterbury earthquake sequence in New Zealand. Tim has worked as an expert witness for a leading insurer during a two year secondment as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
As Geotechnical Discipline Lead, Tim is responsible for project management and the preparation of deliverables across a range of projects, including large brownfield regeneration schemes and infrastructure projects. Tim also enjoys overseeing the training and development of our junior employees, and, as a Chartered Geologist, is an active member of the Geological Society of London.
Nick Bonner, BSc (Hons)
With over 16 years’ experience Nick has worked on many complex geotechnical and geo-environmental remediation and ground investigation projects within a wide range of environments, including over water jack-up platforms, tidal culverts, reservoirs, floodplains, street works, gas holder sites, London Underground and Network Rail infrastructure, schools, agricultural and commercial areas, and greenfield sites.
Nick also has extensive experience of ecology and asbestos projects, and in 2018/19 was a Site Agent on a large investigation in Dartford to inform options for flood defences with a focus on deriving parameters to enable seepage analysis and design of a system of relief wells.
Nick joined GB Card & Partners in July 2020 as part of our growing London team and, as a Principal Engineer, is involved in a wide range of projects.
Valentina Osella, MSc CEnv MIEnvSc FGS
Valentina has over 18 years’ experience in geo-environmental consultancy. She started her career at a mining consultancy firm in Italy where she was responsible for the technical design for the exploitation of ornamental rock quarries. She later moved to Golder Associates Italy where she built an extensive experience in contaminated land characterisation and remediation of fuel filling stations. She strengthened her project management skills to lead the project team for three years.
Since moving to the UK Valentina has designed and supervised ground investigation works on numerous brownfield sites across the country including industrial sites, landfills, former RAF airbases and power stations, preparing geo-environmental interpretative reports, remediation strategies and environmental permitting reports. She is experienced in mining risk assessment for sites with mining history and mineral resource assessment to support the redevelopment of sites underlain by potential mineral resources.
Valentina joined GB Card & Partners in February 2020 and in October 2020 was awarded the status of Chartered Environmentalist. As Principal Geo-Environmental Engineer Valentina is the company’s South-East lead running our recently-opened Canterbury office. Valentina is managing large landfill regeneration projects dealing with contaminated land and ground improvement challenges day by day.
Alberto Cazzaniga, MSc MIEnvSc
Alberto has over 16 years’ experience in contaminated land projects in the UK and EU. His expertise comprises the project management, design and supervision of site investigation and remediation works. He has a comprehensive experience in the production of technical reports and Detailed Quantitative Risk Assessment for the redevelopment of brownfield sites under the planning framework.
Between 2006 and 2015, Alberto worked for Golder Associates Italy, where he built a strong and extensive experience in the characterisation and the remediation of petrol stations, oil depots and manufacturing plants. He was also involved in international projects located in Ireland, India and Kazakhstan coordinating the project team and supervising the design of remediation works. Since 2015 he has worked in a variety of contaminated land projects in the UK including infrastructure, manufacturing plants, landfills, former gasworks and chemical works.
Since joining the company in 2018 Alberto has worked on several significant projects providing the full consultancy package: site investigation, scoping, interpretation, DQRA, remediation strategy and verification, recently becoming Principal Consultant and Geo-Environmental Discipline Lead. Alberto has a proficient knowledge of DQRA for ground contamination vapours and dissolved contamination and the design of in-situ remediation. He is a full member of The Institution of Environmental Sciences and provides training and development of our junior employees.
